Description

It’s the sport that’s sweeping the UK and beyond by storm. With approximately 1,200 clubs, 40,000 estimated players and with international teams formed around the globe, Walking Football is a life-changing game, aimed at the over-fifties.

Including anecdotes from Tom Moran, who made it to England’s international walking football team, it also tells the story, not only about the sport and how the game is growing but also about its links to the NHS and social prescribing.

Social prescribing is set to be heavily developed over the next few years with the NHS referring patients to community services such as Walking Football. Social prescribing works for people with one or more long-term conditions, isolated or lonely people and those with complex social needs that affect their well-being. The book conveys the important message about looking after yourself over the age of fifty and also encourages the reader to get more active to boost mental and physical health.

Tom Moran lives in Stanmore, Middlesex, is retired, and plays Walking Football for Barnet. He’s a member of the England WFA over-60s international squad. Tom says, “My book introduces social prescribing to the layman. Growing evidence shows that referrals to community services such as Walking Football, art classes and even ballroom dancing can help patients live fitter, healthier lives and combat loneliness, anxiety and depression. I would like to get the message across to ageing football fans, their families and anybody who enjoys football that it’s not too late to play the game again.”
